Most late holiday gifts were not shipped very late. They missed their window by two or three days, usually during the most crowded week of the year. Newport Beach Mailboxes & More is a familiar Notary Newport Beach stop for signatures and paperwork, but from October through December most of our counter time goes to packing and shipping gifts. The customers who have the calmest December are almost always the ones who started planning in October.
When are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?
For delivery before December 25 within the lower 48 states, USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by Thursday, December 17, Priority Mail by Friday, December 18, and Priority Mail Express by Saturday, December 19. Ground Advantage packages headed to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories should leave a day earlier, on December 16.
FedEx has published its own chart, with dates aimed at arrival by December 24, and its Ground transit times changed by ZIP code. At the time of writing, UPS had posted its Christmas operating schedule but not its recommended last days to ship. We check the current charts for every carrier at the counter, so you do not have to track them yourself.
These dates are recommendations, not guarantees. USPS notes that actual delivery depends on origin, destination and acceptance time. In practice, the clock starts when your package is scanned in, not when the label is printed.
Which holiday packages have to go out first?
Military and international packages have the earliest deadlines, and one falls before Thanksgiving. USPS recommends mailing Ground Advantage packages to APO, FPO and DPO addresses by Wednesday, November 4. Priority Mail and First-Class Mail to those addresses can wait until December 9.
International gifts come next. For every region USPS lists, from Canada and Mexico to Europe and the Asia/Pacific Rim, the recommended date for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International is December 9. Customs clearance can add time on top of that, especially when the item description on the customs form is vague.
Hanukkah also comes early this year, running December 4 through 12. If a gift needs to arrive for the first night, treat late November as your target rather than mid-December.
How do you work out a ship-by date for each gift?
Start with the date the gift needs to arrive, then count backward. Subtract the transit time for the service you plan to use, then take off two or three more business days as a cushion for holiday volume and weather.
A gift going from Newport Beach to Chicago by ground might take four or five business days in a normal week. Add the cushion and your real ship-by date lands in the first week of December, not December 17. That margin is what keeps you from paying for overnight service on December 21.
It helps to write the list down. Note each recipient, their full address including any apartment or unit number, and whether the gift ships from you or straight from a retailer. A missing unit number can send a package back to the sender, and in late December there is rarely time for a second try.
How can you keep holiday shipping costs down?
Box size matters as much as weight. UPS, FedEx and USPS can bill by dimensional weight, a figure calculated from a box’s length, width and height. A light sweater in an oversized box can cost more to ship than a heavier item in a snug one.
Bring gifts in unwrapped or loosely packed, and let us choose a box that fits. Shipping early keeps your options open, too. Ground services cost far less than express, and in October and November ground is fast enough for almost any domestic address.
Grouping trips helps as well. One visit with five gifts takes less of your time than five separate stops, and it lets us compare rates for every package at once.
What should you bring to a Notary Newport Beach shipping counter?
Bring complete addresses with ZIP codes, plus a phone number for any international recipient. For international packages, have a specific description and value ready for each item, since the customs form asks for both. If something is fragile, valuable or irreplaceable, tell us at the start so we can pack it properly and talk through the declared value before it ships.
Ready to get ahead of the December rush?
Planning holiday shipping in October is not about being early for its own sake. Military Ground Advantage packages are due by November 4, international gifts by December 9 and domestic ground shipments by December 17, and each date feels tighter once holiday volume builds. Visit our Notary Newport Beach location at 2618 San Miguel Drive to get your gifts packed, compared across carriers and on their way while the counters are still quiet.
