What is live scan fingerprinting?
Live scan fingerprinting is a method that uses digital fingerprints to conduct criminal background checks through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Many career paths and organizations already require live scan fingerprinting for employment, licensing, certification, or even volunteer work. More and more organizations are making this a requirement in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Who needs live scan fingerprinting?
Many occupations and career paths require you to get your live scan fingerprinting completed before you are hired–especially jobs that are related to children, the elderly, or the disabled. In order to get certain licenses and certificates, live scan fingerprinting is also required. Volunteer organizations also may require live scan fingerprinting–especially if you are working with children or the elderly. It is also required for VISA or immigration clearances.
What do I need to bring to get my live scan fingerprinting done?
When coming in for live scan fingerprinting services, you will need to bring the completed “Request for Live Scan Service Form” (Form BCIA 8016) which should be provided to you by your requesting agency (the company or organization that is requiring you to get the live scan fingerprinting). You will also need a valid picture id. Government fees and rolling fees should be paid at the time of service unless your organization already paid for the service.
How long does it take to get my live scan fingerprints done?
Livescan fingerprinting takes about 2 to 5 minutes per person. No appointment is necessary. Once you have completed the livescan fingerprinting process, the California Department of Justice will receive your fingerprints within 24 hours. From there, it can take as little as 48 to 72 hours for the Department of Justice to process your fingerprints and send the information to your requesting agency. (Although there are instances when it can take much longer than the typical 48 to 72 hours.)
